How clay became a coffee cup
Explore the Craftsmanship Behind Each Handmade Coffee Cup
1. Throwing
Shape the clay on a potter's wheel, applying even pressure while keeping the clay moist. Avoid overworking it to prevent cracks.
2. Inner Bottom Shaping
A spiral pattern shaped by the thumb is one of the distinctive features of Cheralle handmade coffee cups.
3. Trimming
Use shaping tools and a ruler to refine the cup into the perfect shape, thickness, and dimensions.
4. First Drying
After shaping, let the clay body air dry for 5 to 7 days.
5. Bottom Carving
Once dry, use a scraper to refine the cup's base into a standard shape.
6. Second Drying
After refining the shape, we need another 5 to 7 days to let the clay body dry.
7. Attaching Handles
We manually attach the handles to the cups, so special attention must be paid to install the handles in precise positions.
8.Third Drying
Let the clay body air dry for 10 to 15 days, as the required time depends on the weather and the humidity of the environment. This step is crucial to prevent breakage during firing; if fired while wet, the quick evaporation of moisture can cause shrinkage and damage.
9. Rehydration and Glazing
Rehydration helps eliminate imperfections and improves the yield of finished products. We use a spray gun for glazing, requiring precise techniques to achieve a texture resembling ocean waves. After glazing, the clay body is stored in a dust-free environment for 1 to 2 days before firing.
10. High-Temperature Firing
Cheralle cups are kiln-fired at 2408°F for 12 to 16 hours. Precise control of the temperature curve and glaze thickness determines how the glaze flows on the clay body, necessitating the expertise of an experienced kiln operator.
11. Reduction Atmosphere Control
The kiln operator adjusts the gas valve and temperature settings to control the reduction atmosphere inside the kiln. This creates a sanded texture and enhances artistic appeal, setting our cups apart from mass-produced mugs.
12. Cooling and Inspection
After firing, we let the coffee cups cool naturally in the kiln to avoid cracking. Once cooled, each cup is inspected for defects. Every kiln opening feels like unboxing a surprise, filled with anticipation and excitement.
13. From Forming to Finish
Transforming raw clay into a finished cup involves 16 meticulous steps over 20 to 30 days. Each step reflects our artisans' commitment to precision and professionalism, embodying Cheralle's values in crafting the finest coffee cups for our customers.
