How clay becomes a coffee cup
Inside the hands-on process behind each approved Cheralle handmade mug.
1. Throwing
The maker centers and shapes the clay on a potter's wheel, building the mug's form by hand.
2. Inner Base Shaping
The inner base is refined by hand, leaving the subtle spiral detail characteristic of the making process.
3. Trimming
Once the form is stable, shaping tools refine the wall, rim, and overall proportions.
4. First Drying
The newly shaped body rests and dries gradually before the next round of hand-finishing.
5. Bottom Carving
The base and foot ring are carved and refined to give the mug a balanced, finished stance.
6. Second Drying
After trimming, the mug dries again so the clay body can settle evenly before assembly.
7. Handle Attachment
Each handle is positioned and joined by hand, with attention to comfort, balance, and alignment.
8. Final Drying
The assembled mug is allowed to dry thoroughly and evenly before surface preparation and firing.
9. Surface Preparation and Glazing
The surface is prepared and the selected glaze is applied with care for even coverage and intentional movement.
10. High-Temperature Firing
The prepared pieces are kiln-fired on a schedule matched to the clay body and approved glaze profile.
11. Kiln and Glaze Development
Heat and kiln conditions are carefully managed as the glaze develops its final color, depth, and surface.
12. Cooling and Inspection
After a gradual cooling period, each mug is inspected for finish, structure, and overall quality.
